Day oncology unit and rehabilitation expansion due for Redland

The development of a dedicated day medical oncology unit and expansion of the rehabilitation gym at Mater Private Hospital Redland will soon commence.

Works on the new nine-chair oncology unit and the relocation and expansion of the rehabilitation gym is expected to start by the end of the year and will be complete in 2019.

Mater Private Hospital Redland Director of Clinical Services Tracey Hutley said the project aligned with Mater’s growth strategy and was a result of increased demand for day oncology services.

“We commenced a day oncology service in 2013 which is overseen by our VMOs and specialised clinical staff in partnership with the Mater Cancer Care Centre at South Brisbane.

“Since that time, we have seen significant growth which allows us to provide this important service to more patients within our local community,” she said.

Ms Hutley said the oncology unit meant that patients could be cared for in a specialised facility, instead of being treated in an inpatient ward.

“Patients will greatly benefit from this day oncology unit as it is a purpose built treatment space designed to improve the patient’s experience while undergoing cancer related treatment.

“Relocation of the unit also allows us to expand our inpatient services on the ward so that we are able to care for more patients in our community.”

Over the past several years, the rehabilitation service at Mater Private Hospital Redland has also experienced continued growth in inpatient rehabilitation programs, as well as day therapy services.

“The expansion of the gym facilities will allow for us to meet the increased needs of patient rehabilitation services now and in the future.

“The gym will incorporate dedicated treatment areas and will include full kitchen facilities for patients to regain confidence carrying out every day domestic tasks before they go home.”

Ms Hutley thanked VMOs and staff for their commitment to these services, as well as Mater Foundation for supporting these projects.

Mater’s Capital Works team will be onsite in the lead up and during construction and staff, VMOs and patients will be informed of any impacts throughout the planned works.
