Mater Speech Pathology Services

Mater Speech Pathology provide comprehensive speech pathology service across the lifespan to infants, children and adults who require speech pathology assessment or intervention.

Adult services

Our speech pathologists provide specialist care to adult outpatients (>18 years) for a variety of swallowing and communication disorders including assessment, diagnosis and short-term treatment of:

  • Dysphagia (difficulty swallowing) including Video Fluoroscopic Swallow Studies
  • Disorders of the upper airway and including Chronic Cough and Vocal Cord Dysfunction
  • Acquired neurological speech and language disorders (e.g. dysarthria, aphasia)
  • Dysphonia (voice disorder). Note that patients requiring voice assessment and intervention must be reviewed by an ENT prior to referral. Patients with dysphonia are routinely managed by student speech pathologists under the supervision of an experienced clinician.

Public adult outpatient services are provided by speech pathologists at Mater Hospital Brisbane. Public Speech Pathology referrals can be made via the Mater Allied Health referral form.

 

Due to community demand, adult outpatient services are also provided privately through Mater Health and Wellness. Patients will incur fee for appointments booked with this service. Mater Health and Wellness Clinic staff are recognised providers with private health funds and Medicare. Rebates for services are available where applicable.

Paediatric services

Our paediatric speech pathologists provide expert assessment, diagnosis and treatment (including group therapy) for communication disorders in infants and children (up to school entry) including:

  • Early communication skills
  • Connecting and engaging with others
  • Unclear or limited speech
  • Alternative communication methods
  • Assessment and support to access NDIS

Our team is also specialised in the provision of feeding services for infants and children up to 14 years including assistance with:

  • Sucking, chewing and swallowing skills
  • Increasing the range and volume of foods children eat
  • Multidisciplinary feeding assessments

All paediatric outpatient Speech Pathology services are provided privately through Mater Health and Wellness. Patients will incur fee for appointments booked with this service. Mater Health and Wellness Clinic staff are recognised providers with private health funds and Medicare. Rebates for services are available where applicable.
