After graduating from his medical degree in Queensland, Dr McMillen completed his neurosurgical speciality training in Australia. He worked and studied in adult and paediatric neurosurgery units in Brisbane, Townsville, Adelaide, and Melbourne, before embarking on further post fellowship training overseas. Dr McMillen undertook a subspeciality fellowship in cerebrovascular surgery and neurotrauma at Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge, United Kingdom. He holds a clinical post as a consultant neurosurgeon at the Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital, is a Senior Lecturer in the University of Queensland School of Clinical Medicine, and is a consultant neurosurgeon at Mater Centre for Neuroscience.
Dr McMillen has subspeciality expertise in cerebrovascular surgery. His other areas of interest in adult cranial and spinal neurosurgery include minimally invasive spinal surgery and neuro-oncology. He also specialises in paediatric neurosurgery.
