Biography

Dr Joy Chakraborty is a Brisbane-based Specialist General and Colorectal Surgeon. He is a provisional member of the Colorectal Surgical Society of Australia and New Zealand, a member of General Surgeons Australia and is accredited with the Gastroenterological Society of Australia (GESA) to perform colonoscopy and endoscopy. He is a Senior Lecturer at the University of Queensland and has published in national and international journals.

He completed his General Surgery training in Queensland to be awarded with a Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons. Following this, he undertook three years of further training to subspecialise in Colorectal Surgery. He spent his years of post fellowship subspecialty training at The Princess Alexandra Hospital in Brisbane, Bankstown and St George Private Hospitals in Sydney and then at The Royal Melbourne Hospital and Epworth Hospitals in Melbourne. This provided him extensive experience in all areas of colon and rectal surgery. Dr Chakraborty currently holds a public appointment at Princess Alexandra and operates privately at Mater Private Hospital Brisbane.

Dr Chakraborty specialises in advanced laparoscopic surgery and has a special interest in minimally invasive surgery. He provides prompt investigations and treatment options for both benign and malignant conditions which include colon and rectal cancer, inflammatory bowel disease, diverticular disease and rectal prolapse. He also treats common causes of rectal bleeding such as haemorrhoids, anal fissure and anal fistula.

He performs laparoscopic surgery for hernia repair (inguinal/femoral/ventral/incisional) and offers general surgery treatment for all emergency and elective conditions.
