Mater Physiotherapy Services

Mater has comprehensive physiotherapy services available to both adult and paediatric patients. From acute musculoskeletal conditions, respiratory and vestibular conditions, to extensive women's health and paediatric treatments. Please refer to the table below for an outline of services provided.

Patient referrals are triaged according to prioritisation guidelines, and are booked for appointments accordingly. If you have any questions, or for more information, please telephone 07 3163 6000 Monday to Friday, 7.30 am to 4.30 pm.

Referrals for all patients can be sent direct to the department via fax on 07 3163 2267.

For Patients with Private Health Insurance

To support the demand for physiotherapy services, Mater Health and Wellness*, Mater/ACU Research Clinic* and Mater Back Stability Research Clinic* provide services for patients with private health insurance. Please refer to the table below for an outline of services provided.

Adult services

Mater Physiotherapy

  • Acute and chronic musculoskeletal conditions
  • Respiratory conditions including patients suitable for pulmonary rehabilitation program
  • Patients with lymphoedema - early or chronic
  • Vestibular conditions - BPPV

Mater Health and Wellness*

  • General musculoskeletal problems

Mater / ACU Research Clinic  (incorporating Back Stability Research Clinic)

  • Acute and chronic spinal pain (adults and adolescents)
  • Adolescent sports injury

Continence and women's health services  

Mater Physiotherapy

  • Musculoskeletal and pelvic floor dysfunction (PFD) in prenatal and postnatal women, booked to have their baby at MMH (including long-term or persisting symptoms)
  • PFD (including incontinence, pelvic floor pain disorders, prolapse and obstructed defaecation) in:
    • women (GP referral accepted)
    • men (including post-prostatectomy) 
    • children - specialist  referral required

Mater Health and Wellness*

  • All antenatal and postnatal musculoskeletal physiotherapy for:
    • pelvic girdle, thoracic and lumbar back pain
    • carpal tunnel syndrome and De Quervain’s
    • abdominal wall dysfunction (including Rectus Diastasis)
  • Pelvic floor dysfunction within pregnancy and early postnatal period (up to 8/52)
  • Baby developmental handling and infant massage
  • Individualised education for pregnancy and postnatal recovery
  • Wake Up Dry - nocturnal eneuresis in children

Mater / ACU Research Clinic*

  • Pelvic girdle, thoracic and lumbar pain / dysfunction beyond 8/52 postnatal
  • Abdominal wall dysfunction beyond 6/52 postnatal
  • Established incontinence and pelvic floor dysfunction (including pelvic organ prolapse, obstructed defaecation, pelvic floor pain disorders)  in women and mothers beyond 8/52 postnatal
  • PFD (including incontinence and obstructed defaecation) in:
    • men (inc. post-prostatectomy) - specialist referral required
    • children - specialist  referral required

Mater Health and Wellness*

  • Clubfoot management and serial casting
  • Baby and toddler developmental assessment and treatment
  • Approved provider Better Start for Children with a disability program

Mater / ACU Research Clinic*

  • Paediatric and adolescent sports injury

*Patients will incur fee for appointments booked with this service. Mater Health and Wellness Clinic staff are recognised providers with private health funds and Medicare. Rebates for services are available where applicable.
