A new state-wide benchmark in breast reconstruction
Mater has developed a new multidisciplinary model of care aimed at improving the current low state-wide breast reconstruction rate (<15%) for breast cancer patients undergoing mastectomy.

Between Mater and Queensland Health, there has been a growing realisation of the need to provide breast reconstruction to breast cancer patients undergoing mastectomy—either at the time of their mastectomy, or at some later stage.

Mater was chosen by Queensland Health to pilot the new Oncoplastic Multidisciplinary Team Model (MDT) incorporating a Breast Surgeon, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon, Physiotherapy, Dietician, Psychology and Breast Care Nurse.

The project has been a success with reconstruction rates at Mater at 46% compared to the state average of 14%, and referrals to the MDT decreasing time to reconstruction by an average of 118 days.  Multidisciplinary team involvement was also linked with optimisation in the home for close and distant patients.
