Mater has been provided with an additional $20 million of funding each year to accept extra emergency presentations through Mater Hospital Brisbane Emergency Department, as well as manage the flow on effects for patients who require admission.
Mater Medical Director Medical/Chronic Disease Services Trisha O’Moore-Sullivan said Ward 10A had undergone a refurbishment as well as a review of the model of care.
“The refurbished ward 10A now provides us with 17 acute inpatient beds for patients who are identified as likely to have a length of stay less than three days on admission as well as some sub-acute beds,” Dr O’Moore-Sullivan said.
The ward has been designed to meet the new standards for delirium and dementia care ensuring that the colours, furniture and the design of the ward is appropriate for elderly and frail patients.
“We have also made a deliberate investment in allied health by turning a multi-purpose room into a communal eating room which is really important for some of our older patients to get them up, engaged and walking around to help them get back home sooner,” Dr O’Moore-Sullivan said.
“The ward also includes safe haven high acuity beds for patients who require a higher level of acute care as well as eight single isolation rooms.”
Dr O’Moore-Sullivan said that Mater is currently averaging around 18 extra ambulances per day.
Mater Education ran a simulation prior to the opening of the ward.
