Mater Health GP Education 2022 - It's a wrap!

In a final nod to the 2022 GP Education calendar year, Mater Private Hospital Brisbane was privileged to deliver the Mater Health Orthopaedics Workshop for GPs—a showstopping multifaceted and multi-modal education seminar for our partners in care, General Practitioners (GPs).

Mater orthopaedic surgeons have treated close to 6500 private and public patients to date in 2022 across our hospital network in Southeast Queensland, referred to them by local GPs.

On Saturday 12 November, Mater hosted more than 50 of those GPs for a dynamic, deep learning, focussed workshop encompassing all aspects of orthopaedics and musculoskeletal medicine, then finished off the education year (and CPD triennium) with networking drinks and canapes.

In Australia musculoskeletal conditions are the fourth leading contributor to the total disease burden, and according to statistics from the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare an estimated 1 in 3 (approximately 6.9 million) people have arthritis or other musculoskeletal conditions. Many of these patients can be managed effectively in general practice without having to seek specialist orthopaedic intervention, however it’s essential for GPs to be able to determine when specialist care may be appropriate.

With a comprehensive program spanning upper and lower limb orthopaedics, sports medicine, chronic and acute injuries, robotic assisted surgery and rehabilitation, the program was developed in consultation with GPs to align with and meet their learning needs.

Education was facilitated and delivered by seven of our most experienced orthopaedic surgeons from Mater Private Hospital Brisbane, a specialist rehabilitation physician, with imaging expertise delivered by Queensland X-Ray radiology.

To provide a well-rounded education experience, blended learning techniques were applied with a mix of didactic presentations, case study workshops and some hands-on practical assessment techniques, designed to give GPs the knowledge and skills to support their patients.

During breaks, GPs were given the opportunity to experience the latest in orthopaedic theatre technology with live robotic demonstrations using the Velys digital system (J&J DePuy Synthes) and able to take part in a virtual reality theatre experience with the ROSA orthopaedic knee guidance system (Zimmer Biomet).

Since launching GP Education in southeast Queensland in 2003, Mater Health has consistently delivered high quality, relevant and useful education to thousands of GPs, in line with the national curriculum for medical education, and accredited by the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (@RACGP)

Almost twenty years later we are proud to now be delivering the same high calibre of GP Education throughout Mater’s entire private hospital network including north, central and southeast Queensland.

We are also incredibly grateful for the support of our sponsors and partners to help us deliver these events, and would like to recogniseDePuy Synthes and Zimmer Biomet for their support of the Mater Health Orthopaedics workshop for GPs. We'd also like to thank  Queensland X-Ray for their expertise and ongoing support throughout many of our GP education programs this year, allowing us to continue to provide quality education at no cost to GPs across Queensland.

Mater Health—building healthy communities by supporting the educational needs of our GP partners in care.
