Statewide maternity network update

As part of our commitment to build Mater’s statewide maternity network, Medical Director Mothers Babies and Women’s Health, Associate Professor Mike Beckmann and Director Clinical Services Mater Mothers’ Hospitals, Maree Reynolds, have successfully established bimonthly clinical quality meetings.

The sessions bring together obstetricians, gynaecologists, paediatricians and local leadership teams from Mater’s private hospitals across the state, to share new evidence-based best practices, benchmark data and look for opportunities to learn from each other and our consumers. Feedback from clinicians and staff across the state has been positive.

"We have found that the statewide network has allowed us to network with Mater sites that are similar in size and service, this has allowed us to share  quality improvement ideas on improvements that can be implemented locally in our services," said Mater Private Hospital Redland Director of Clinical Services, Carlie Nielsen.

"This statewide network has also bought our local network together to look at what service improvements we would like to work on and share with the group."

Last month’s meeting, held in Mackay, focused on the interest women are showing in midwifery continuity of care models, with Mater’s leadership team now looking at ways to expand its private Midwifery Group Practice model across the state, which is currently being trialled in South Brisbane.

A new statewide Parenting Support Centre service

From 1 March, women living in Central and North Queensland who have their baby at Mater will have access to Mater Mothers’ Parenting Support Centre.

The service, which has long been established in South East Queensland and sees hundreds of families each year, provides care and guidance to families and babies for up to six months after birth, at no out-of-pocket expense. It is now available, through telehealth appointments, to women in Mackay, Rockhampton and Townsville, providing access to postnatal care from the comfort of their own home.
