In this year’s Queen’s Birthday Honours list, Professor Mark Smithers was made a Member in the General Division (AM) of the Order of Australia. The Order of Australia is the principal and most prestigious means of recognising outstanding members of the community at a national level.
Professor Smithers was recognised for the significant contribution he has made to medicine in the fields of gastrointestinal and melanoma surgery, to medical education, and to professional organisations.
“To receive an Order of Australia is a significant honour, to be acknowledged by my colleagues for my work is very special. I would also like to thank my family for their support and encouragement over the years, without which I would not have been able to do the activities that have led to these accolades,” Professor Smithers said.
Just recently, Professor Smithers also received the Royal Australian College of Surgeons Sir Hugh Devine Award for meritorious service to surgery—the highest honour the College can bestow upon a Fellow during their lifetime.
