My Health Record

Monday 4 June 2018

A My Health Record allows Australians to store their healthcare information, such as medications, allergies, health summaries and diagnostic test results, where it can be easily accessed online by authorised doctors, specialists or hospitals.

The Australian Government recently commenced a national expansion program and expects more than 90 per cent of Australians will have a secure online digital health record by the end of 2018.

This year the Australian Government will create a My Health Record for every Australian, unless they choose not to have one. There will be a three-month opt-out period that will run from 16 July to 15 October 2018. This will be followed by a one month data reconciliation period, prior to the records being created in mid-November 2018. Patients may choose not to have a My Health Record set up for them, but will need to actively opt out by 15 October 2018.

Mater has been successful in being supported to participate in this initiative, which is being run by the Australian Digital Health Agency.

The initial part of the project at Mater is expected to be delivered by the end of June 2018 and will see pathology and diagnostic imaging results for all Mater patients uploaded to their My Health Record, except in the case that they have withdrawn consent.

At Mater, this will provide clinicians with access to their patients’ My Health Record through our Verdi portal. Mater will then look to run further projects in future to add other clinical documents to the record, including discharge and medication summaries.

The key benefits for the project are reducing unnecessary diagnostic tests and making a patient’s health information easily accessible at the point of care to our clinicians and care teams.

Once a patient has a My Health Record, pathology and diagnostic imaging reports may be uploaded to that record. Patient consent is not required to upload a diagnostic report. If a patient expresses that they do not want a report added to their My Health Record, the requesting doctor or patient should amend the form to reflect this decision, with either a ticked do not send reports to My Health Record box or write do not send reports to My Health Record on the request form. If the patient changes their mind after the report has been uploaded, they may log into their record and remove the report from view.
