National Antimicrobial Prescribing Survey (NAPS)

Wednesday 17 February 2021

Prescribing the right antimicrobial at the right time for the right diagnosis is integral to reducing antimicrobial resistance. Optimising antimicrobial use amongst hospital patients is the responsibility of all healthcare workers.

In October last year, Mater hospitals in South East Queensland underwent a National Antimicrobial Prescribing Survey and the following outcomes were achieved:

  • Target for overall compliance with guidelines in antimicrobial prescribing (75%)
  • Above national average for ceasing post-operative surgical prophylaxis within 24 hours of surgery (85.6%)

Areas for improvement:

  • Documenting indication which can be achieved by documenting as part of prescription order in medication chart (78.4%)
  • Documenting review or stop date as part of prescription—Mater is performing above the national average but below the national target.

If you have any queries regarding this survey or the outcomes please contact Diana Moore or Ian Gassiep on 07 3163 2810.
