Shortage of intravenous Benzylpenicillin

There is currently an Australian-wide shortage of intravenous Benzylpenicillin. Supply of stock is anticipated to be constrained at least until January 2020.

Mater has put in place measure to secure stock of IV Benzylpenicillin. However, in order to ensure that patients who are most in need of his antimicrobial agent are able to receive it, we ask for your co-operation and support please with the measures outlined below.

As per Australian Therapeutic Guidelines, conserve the use of IV Benzylpenicillin for the following indications:

  1. Neurosyphilis
  2. Congenital syphilis

For all other indications please refer to the guidelines below for empiric regimes for alternatives to Benzylpenicillin.

If Benzylpenicillin is still recommended for the indication, consult with Infectious Diseases physician on-call via Mater switchboard (8111).
