Mater South Brisbane Water Quality Update

Thursday 14 September 2017

Water Quality
Mater is committed to patient and staff health and safety and undertakes rigorous, regular monitoring, testing and maintenance of its water systems in line with state and national regulatory requirements.

Water bubblers/chilled water fountains
Recently Mater has made the decision to decommission all water bubblers in patient and public areas to ensure all drinking water is of the highest quality. Consequently, filtered water is available at no cost to all patients admitted to or attending Mater for any reason.

Ice Machines
Ice machines are currently under review for water quality and maintenance. Where clinically required some ice machines have been upgraded in ward areas at the Mater.

Drinking water
Mater recently ceased routine provisions of bottled water to patients across the South Brisbane campus. This decision has been made in line with the Queensland Health Guidelines on drinking water and as a result of the confidence we maintain in the management of our own water systems for patients, visitors and staff. Despite some public perception, conventional bottled water is not a sterile product, may contain some microorganisms and is not necessarily a better source of quality water.

In addition to safety, environmental sustainability and waste reduction are two key initiatives that help drive limiting bottled water usage.

Supply of water – Water will remain on the beverage list for room service at Mater. When patients order water with their meal a jug of filtered water will be supplied. Surplus jugs of filtered water will also be supplied to the ward pantry in high risk wards where staff can access additional water for patients; all other wards will have surplus jugs that can be filled in the ward pantry. Signage will be placed in all high risk pantries to indicate filtered water jugs.

If you require further information related to this update please email Infection Control.
