Mater theatres undergo an audit as part of the Safety in Surgery project

Wednesday 11 October 2017

At Mater there is nothing more important than safety and we are continually looking at ways to improve.

The Surgical and Acute Care Services clinical stream is currently undertaking an initiative focused on improving Safety in Surgery with an emphasis on the Surgical Safety Checklist.

As part of this initiative an audit across all Mater operating theatres (excluding procedural sessions) will take place over the coming weeks to gauge compliance with processes such as Sign-in, Time-Out and Sign-Out.

This baseline audit will be observational only and will be performed across the four week theatre schedule commencing on Monday 9 October and concluding on Friday 3 November.

The audit has been designed in conjunction with Mater Research to provide a rigorous framework and to ensure the outcomes can be shared.  It involves ‘trained’ clinical auditors entering operating theatres across this period (Monday – Friday only) observing processes against the audit templates which have been developed to ensure the anonymity of patients and all operating theatre staff.
