Mater welcomes Director, Neurosciences

Mater is pleased to welcome Professor Michael O’Sullivan as our Medical Director, Neurosciences.

Professor O’Sullivan will lead our Neurosciences clinical stream to ensure it consistently delivers high quality clinical care across all its services, with a strong focus on integration of clinical services with education and research.

This integration will be supported through his appointment as Professor, Queensland Brain Institute and Co-Leader, Neurosciences and Cognitive Health, Mater Research.

Professor O’Sullivan’s commitment to providing strong clinical and strategic leadership is reflected in his previous roles as Reader in Clinical Neuroscience at King’s College, and Consultant Neurologist and Strategy Lead for Stroke, King’s Health Partners. He was also Theme Lead, Vascular Disorders at NIHR Biomedical Research Unit for Dementia, and previously held the roles of Clinician Scientist Fellow at Cardiff University Brain Research Imaging Centre and Honorary Consultant Neurologist at Cardiff and Vale NHS Trust.

Professor O’Sullivan has authored more than 50 peer-reviewed research publications in both clinical fields and fundamental neuroscience. His current research projects focus on stroke recovery, dementia and the interface with Alzheimer’s disease.

A Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians (London), Professor O’Sullivan holds a Doctor of Philosophy, Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery from University of London, and a Bachelor of Arts (First Class Honours) from University of Cambridge.

Through his many achievements which span health, education and research, Professor O’Sullivan demonstrates a commitment to the integration of these fields—and subsequently Mater’s Exceptional Every Time strategy—to support the provision of safe, low-variability, evidence-based healthcare.
