Biography

Professor Nestor is a cognitive neurologist who leads the Memory and Cognitive Disorders Clinic at Mater. This is the first cognitive neurology clinic to be established in Queensland. The clinic takes referrals from specialists and has particular focus on degenerative forms of suspected dementia including:

 

  • Alzheimer’s disease
  • Posterior cortical atrophy
  • Mild cognitive impairment
  • Progressive aphasias
  • Frontotemporal dementias
  • Dementia with Lewy bodies
  • Progressive supranuclear palsy and corticobasal syndrome.

 

Professor Nestor studied medicine at the University of Melbourne and trained in neurology in Melbourne and at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery in London. He did his PhD on positron emission tomography (PET) and neuropsychology in dementia at the University of Cambridge where he subsequently remained for 15 years working as a clinician-scientist at the university and honorary consultant neurologist at Addenbrooke’s Hospital.

In 2012 he was recruited as professor of cognitive neurology to the German Center for Neurodegenerative Diseases (DZNE). He was recruited from Germany to be conjoint professor of cognitive neurology at Mater and the Queensland Brain Institute, University of Queensland, establishing Mater’s Memory and Cognitive Disorders Clinic in 2018.

His research publications have been, as of August 2021, cited over 16,000 times (source: Google Scholar).  He has been an invited speaker on dementia-related topics in numerous countries throughout Europe, North and South America, and, Asia.
