Biography

Associate Professor Leigh Atkinson joined Mater’s medical staff in 1962 to commence neurosurgical training under his mentor, Dr Geoffrey Toakley.

He then travelled to Edinburgh to complete his training under Professor John Gillingham before returning to Mater in 1970, co-founding the Mater (Queensland) Craniofacial Unit with Dr Tony Emmett in 1977.

Associate Professor Atkinson’s esteemed career has seen him appointed an Officer of the Order of Australia, Vice President of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons, President of the Neurosurgical Society of Australasia, Dean of the Faculty of Pain Medicine at The University of Queensland and the Treasurer of the World Federation of Neurosurgical Societies to name but a few.

He currently consults as a pain medicine specialist.
