Enhancing cardiac care from "door to door"

Mater Private Hospital Brisbane will host an educational session on 22 July 2009 to discuss the health care journey of a cardiac patient from “door to door”.

The session has been devised to educate and promote a cohesive approach to patient care from the time a patient calls Queensland Ambulance Service (QAS) to when they are discharged from hospital.

Using a pre-established scenario, health care professionals will have the opportunity to describe what their role in the care and treatment of a patient involves.

Cardiovascular Educator, Helen Ashford said the exercise is designed to ensure the process of patient care is seen as a whole rather than unit specific.

“The information session is to show how each specialised unit contributes to the care process to ensure the best and safest outcome for the patient,” she said.

“As health care professionals we often only see what our own area does in the patient’s journey, so the session is designed as a forum in which we can share information.”

The session will cover topics including triage of a patient with chest pain, angiograms in the setting of acute myocardial infarction, intra aortic balloon counterpulsation, emergency intubation, cardiac rehabilitation and follow up care. Input from QAS, Mater Private Hospital Brisbane’s Emergency, CardioVascular, Coronary Care and Intensive Care Units, and the Queensland Cardiovascular Group will be given.

It is expected to take place in the Conference Room on Level 1, Mater Medical Centre from 6.30 pm to 9.30 pm. Visiting Medical Officers and nursing staff are invited to attend.
